Our final program of the year is to be held December 21, 2006 commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the end of Montgomery Bus Boycott. Because Mrs. Parks wintered in Los Angeles, and the 21st is also National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, (the first day of winter) we are hosting a "Soup and Bowl Fellowship" with persons living in shelters. We feel this is a meaningful way to honor those who died homeless in 2006, while at the same time, continuing the commitment Mrs. Parks made to the war on poverty. We want to call media attention to the need for a national outcry for public policy change so that we can eliminate or drastically reduce this problem. We will bring examples of the Rosa Parks spirit of sharing.
Below is our format from past dialogues. We are always flexible in shaping each fellowship into an opportunity that best benefits the shelter residents. We would like you to consider a small group of 35 clients and we could hold it off site. If that is not manageable we will be prepared to do a program after dinner with the 400 or so as you indicated. We would modify the storytelling and include music sand singing. Please know that we will adjust according to your direction.
Details of the event as done in the past are as follows.
Would like the participants to be multicultural about 30-35 max. of your selection.
We will have 20-25 persons mostly locals who are affiliated with the Institute who will be fellowship with the participants. These are people who knew Mrs. Parks and some students in our current program and some alumni from past years.
Ideally we would like to convene the event in a setting away from the shelter that has a kitchen and a meeting room area. The agenda is to interact while preparing the vegetables for a pot of soup for donation to another shelter. Share stories and remember the compassion and spirit of Rosa Parks.
