United Nations Day Peace Prayers
Dear Ecumenical Leader,
We are inviting you to join us in carrying on the legacy of Rosa Parks by commemorating the first anniversary (October 24, 2006) of her homegoing. The Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development, the organization Mrs. Parks founded in 1987 to carry on her lifework is planning a series of events to provide youth, activists, friends, family, and individuals around the world with an occasion to recollect and connect to honor and model her contribution as an ordinary person. Mrs. Parks dedicated her time and resources to the development of the Institute as a means for leaving a legacy to youth. She actively participated in leading civil rights historical education; peace and justice advocacy; and youth development. In our quest to assist young people ages 11 to 17, to reach their highest potential we have touched the lives of their families and others via our experiential learning approach, intergenerational programming and collaborative partnerships with other organizations to advance the Rosa Parks philosophy of "Quiet Strength". The evidence of our success has been manifest in the productive participation of Pathways to Freedom alumni, now young adults, as leaders, community activists and supporters, contributing from all walks of life. Mrs. Parks always reminded us by saying "as long as people use tactics to oppress or restrict other people from being free, there is work be done".
In acknowledgement of the occasion we ask that you consider the following options that serve to reflect on the life and work of Mrs. Parks.
1. Convene a 6.a.m. - 7 a.m. (EST) Rosa Parks Global Peace Prayer service on
October 24, 2006 (also United Nations Day).
2. Make a "Vote as Rosa Parks" appeal to civic responsibility by encouraging voter participation in the November 5, 2006 election.
3. Share information about Mrs. Parks’ contributions in your worship service.
Please RSVP by returning the attached registration form by Fax to (313) 894-3566 or RSVP by Phone (313) 965-0606.
We are a non-profit 501C3 organization. All financial donations are tax deductible according to federal regulations. We look forward to your support in actively continuing Mrs. Parks’ work and maintaining the legacy that Rosa Parks established.
Yours in Peace,
Lila Cabbil, President Emeritus Anita Peek, Executive Director
